The Peeping Tom Story
- reinterpreted by Amy Y. Kim
The
newly reinterpreted story of Lady Godiva, from the viewpoint of Peeping Tom, is
as followed:
Tom is a tailor who aspires everyday to see the beautiful Godiva.
One day, when he follows her, he sees her begging to her husband, the king of
Coventry, to abolish oppressive taxation in the town of Coventry. Because of
the repeated request of Godiva, the king promises to reduce the tax on one
condition; Godiva will have to ride on a horse naked and come down to the
marketplace, one of the crowded places. Godiva accepts. Tom is very happy to
have a chance to see Godiva naked.
But, the king issues a proclamation that all
people should close their windows and stay inside of their house. Tom is
disappointed, but he does not give up and makes a plan to see naked Godiva by
hiding himself.
On the day, Godiva rides down to the market place, and Tom
peeps Lady Godiva behind the keyhole of his tailor shop. Unfortunately, he does
not recognize that the king is watching him behind. Finally, he gets punished
and blinded by the king.
